Rev Robert L Davis Sr, moved from Alabama to NJ in 1968. Looking for a church similar to his upbringing he joined the Mt Zion Baptist Church in South Hackensack.
Shortly thereafter, he met his future wife, the former Carolyn Fields, and they were joined in marriage on May 22, 1971 at her home church - Varick Memorial AME Zion.
He was ordained & served as deacon at Mt. Zion until he received and accepted the call to preach the gospel. Licensed & ordained by Rev. Robert Curry in 1981, he furthered his education with a BA in Theology from the Northern Baptist School of Religion ('82) a Masters in Theology from Temple Theological College ('83). and pastored the John Wesley Methodist Church ('81-'91) & New Jerusalem Baptist Church ('93- '03).
Reverend Carolyn Davis was born and raised in Hackensack. A registered nurse, she attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and was only the fourth Black woman to graduate from Hackensack Hospital School of Nursing.
She was raised with a strong faith background and worked steadfastly in the church from a young age. As First Lady, she served in multiple capacities including choir director, trustee, women's ministries and Sunday School teacher. She received and accepted the call to preach in 1999 and was later ordained by her husband in 2007.
In 2004, Rev Davis had a vision for a new church., and along with his wife, family and a few dedicated members they stepped out on Faith. With sacrifice, hard trials, faith in God and a belief that all things are possible an old plumbing factory opened its doors on July 4, 2004 as the Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Today Cornerstone continues to serve as a spirit-filled sanctuary in the Hackensack community.
Pastor Robert Davis passed from this life in 2020. Pastor Carolyn continues to lead the congregation and build upon the vision shared with her husband - guiding the journey of Cornerstone into the future and knowing that God will always make a way.
